Uke 'Ohana O'ahu

Come to the North Shore of Oahu and touch the roots of old style Hawaiian music and aloha culture while learning to play and compose on your ukulele like never before!

Five melodic days of Aloha, playing Ukulele and studying in master classes , experiencing the cultural traditions of the epic north shore of Oahu, savoring the beauty of the land and seascapes and enjoying delicious local cuisine.

Ukuele Classes with world famous musicians Craig Chee, Sarah Maisel, Kalei Gamiao, Bryan Tolentino and Walt Keale will open up new possibilities of skill and pleasure for the ukulele enthusiast as well as a deeper experiential understanding and appreciation of Hawaiian culture.

Mornings of Ukulele classes, afternoon with excursions to Hawaiian cultural sites and events followed by evenings of Kana Ka Pila under the stars. Our meals will be provided by local farmers and foragers to connect us all to a deeper sense of place.

We are excited to have two wonderful Hawaiian Style Musicians joining us for a double workshop. Both musicians are fantastic teachers and you won’t want to miss out on this one of a kind experience.

Kani Ka Pila 101
Steven focuses on 3 popular traditional Hawaiian songs from the popular *He Mele Aloha songbook (song handouts provided). Students will learn the common rules for participating in a traditional Hawaiian jam session or Kani Ka Pila. These general principals are the foundation for any type of jam session and can be utilized in any genre of music. Focus on leading your own song in a group setting and valuable skills like listening, awareness, understanding song structure and keys. To highlight their new skills, each student will have the opportunity to lead the group with their own song of choice.
*Limited number of He Mele Aloha Books will be available for purchase.

Next level thinking: being an accompanist
Bryan will take you through steps using your own Musical awareness to make choices while playing in real time. This class is perfect for those that are looking to add more to their comping and listening skills. To get the most out of this class, students should be comfortable with their basic chords and barre chords.

Bryan is known for his ability to compliment any player he performs with. This takes skill, but also listening and being aware of what is going on around you. Taking you through his thought process of moving up the fretboard, he’ll get you truly LISTENING to those around you. This class will give you the tools you need to enhance any style of jam.

I’ll be performing at the Grand Opening of The ʻUkulele Site @ Kakaʻako on Sunday, November 18 from 2-2:50pm. Joining me on guitar will be Halehaku Seabury and on bass Danny Naipo! Led Kaapana at 3pm, Paula Fuga at 4pm and Craig Chee and Sarah Maisel at 5pm. Kalei GamiaoAndrew Molina and Corey Fujimoto will be playing throughout the day too!
